NATIONAL COMPETITIONS
Although Tae Kwon-Do is a Martial Art first and foremost, the ITF has an excellent sporting aspect in the form of competition.
In the UKTF we host a number of competitions throughout the year. The majority of championships are contested at National level (Scottish and UK National Championships), with additional competitions from local schools and other ITF groups. All students, White belt to Black belt can enter.
Competitors are categorised into specific groups - Children under 13yrs, 13-17yrs, Adults 18-30yrs and Seniors +30yrs .
Within these groups, competitors are further divided into skill levels which are designated by belt colour, and weight categories. The under 13's are not split by weight but by height.
The events contested are Patterns; Sparring, Power Test & Special Technique. Details of the content of these events can be found on the International Competition Page.
Below are some photos from our National Competitions:
Pattern Event The pattern events are contested in a pyramid system similar to sparring, with two practitioners competing together. Judges will decide which of the pair performed the best and they will be selected to go through to the next round. The winner will be the one who wins the final round. Four medals will be awarded 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 2 Bronzes.
Sparring Event The sparring is essentially open controlled combat situation set to specific rules. Points are scored for controlled successful attacks to specific areas of an opponent. A complete guide to the rules of all competitions not just sparring can be found on the ITF website.
Power Test The power test contest is an event which tests the power and accuracy of specified foot and hand techniques against re-usable breaker boards. Points are awarded for clean and partial breaks. The winner will be the competitor that accumulates the most points by breaking the most boards.
Special Technique The special technique contest is an event which tests the athletic agility of the competitor, by attempting to hit a target at a predetermined height or distance over objects, using designated foot techniques. This one of the most spectacular events in Tae Kwon-Do.
