HAITI EARTHQUAKE APPEAL
28 day sponsored fast
Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti in which the President of our Organisation (ITF) Grandmaster Tran Trieu Quan was killed, Master Gordon Wallace VII Degree decided to undertake a 28 day sponsored fast to raise funds.

His fast ran from Midnight on 31st January until Midnight on 28th February.  In this time, he was on a strict liquid diet of fruit juice, tea and clear soup.  He was not allowed solid food of any kind, no coffee or alcohol.  Although towards the end he was starting to feel some dizziness, he ensured that he stuck to the diet implicitly.  In this time, he has lost 11kg in weight (24.2lbs) and 4.5 inches from round his waist.

He has been overwhelmed by the generosity people have shown and has already managed to raise over £1000.  The actual total is still to be announced.

When his fast ended on Sunday 28th February, he was greeted at 12pm by some surprise visitors who arrived to help him celebrate (Mr David McNairn VI Deg, Mr Mark Boydell IV Deg and Mr Andy Lister I Deg).  A big thank you to them for taking the time to come up at that time of night to mark the end of his fast.  Although after not having any solid food for so long, he was unable to eat much, he did enjoy being allowed to.  He also enjoyed a glass of champagne.

Further details and grand total to follow.

British Red Cross

ACADEMY - Monthly Donation
As the government launches its National Pandemic Service, the British Red Cross is stepping up its support for local health and emergency services to make sure the most vulnerable receive the help they need.  The British Red Cross are a a volunteer-led humanitarian organisation that helps people in crisis, whoever and wherever they are.  Their values sit alongside the fundamental principles, which underpin everything the
International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement does.

We believe that this is an extremely worthwhile organisation and a such, are doing our little bit to help by giving a monthly donation from the Blackbelt Academy to the British Red Cross.

ARCHWAY
A raffle was held in the academy to help raise funds for the Archway New Horizons appeal.  Archway is a local charity which provides much needed respite for children and adults with disabilities.  The unit at Dyce is in need of an extension and refurbishment.  The raffle was to guess the name of the bear.  The winner was Chloe Nolan who guessed the name Chantelle.  Chloe won the scented candle teddy bear.  Thank you to everyone who entered the raffle and helped raise £32.00 for the Archway appeal.

The ARCHIE Foundation
Our Academy in continuing to raise funds for the ARCHIE Foundation with the use of a collection tin.  We also have fines for mobile phones ringing during classes and gradings - all fines go straight to ARCHIE !!

ARCHIE's Appeal was founded in 2000 to raise at least £3 million to ‘make the difference' in the new £24 million Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital. The major aim of the hospital is to be family focussed. They now have a 24 bedded parent accommodation unit and single rooms at ward level with pull-down beds and en-suite facilities to allow a parent or carer to be close to their ill child.

They also have a multi-faith sanctuary and several parent lounges to give parents and carers quiet spaces and time. Children also benefit from the many play areas, colourful and comforting decoration and art projects. The Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital truly is a family centred facility.

MALAWI Sponsored Event
£100 Donated

Mr Burns (2nd Deg)
took part in a sponsored cycle from John O’Groats to Lands End during the last week in July 2005 to help raise funds for the people of Malawi.  Over recent months, the sun has scorched seasonal crops and the people are struggling with famine. Jonathan cycled with a team of five other riders hoping to bring relief to these people. In addition, monies raised will also go to orphan and elderly care, as well as building local churches/community centres in the areas affected.
Mr Burns  would like to thank everyone for supporting his efforts to raise money for people in Malawi . He says it was an excellent experience, filled with lots of ups and downs and was also great to see parts of his homeland that he otherwise would have missed.  In the end, it looks like the grand total they have raised will be just over £15,000, of that £235 was raised from the students at the Academy and £100 was dontated by the Academy.

COMIC RELIEF - Red Nose Day
£1449.50
Raised

This year, students from the Academy took part in a Sponsored Kick to help raise funds for Comic Relief.  All students were invited to attend classes with Wild Hair & Red Noses for a small donation and a large number of students took part in Sponsored Kicks.  The total amount raised has now been sent away and the grand total of £1449.50 was raised.  Some of the younger students surprised us with the amount of kicks they could do, so well done everyone !!

A special mention must go to Mitchell Stage who is a member of our Kickin' Kids Programme.
Mitchell managed to raise the most sponsor money out of everyone who took part.
He raised £114.00 and the academy awarded him with a set of Sparring Gear (pictured left) for this great effort.

Well done !!

TSUNAMI ASIA Appeal
